Prague parking zones explained: blue, purple, and orange

July 12, 2026 · Guides for drivers

Prague’s paid parking streets use three colours to signal different regimes: blue, purple, and orange. The colour is a useful first clue, but it is not the complete parking permission. The traffic sign, operating hours, maximum stay, payment instructions, and any local restriction still control the exact space.

The official Prague zone overview is the best place to check the current meaning of each colour. Use this guide to decide what to inspect before you leave the car.

Blue zones: residential first

Blue zones are designed mainly for residents, businesses, and property owners who hold a long-term permit for the relevant area. Visitors can usually use short-term paid parking during the stated operating hours, but the permitted duration depends on the location and the sign. The official guidance currently distinguishes shorter limits in the centre from longer limits outside it.

Blue streets normally do not have a conventional parking meter at every space. Visitors should follow the current online payment process, enter the exact location and registration plate, and keep the confirmation. A resident permit is not the same thing as a visitor payment and does not automatically apply to every Prague district.

Purple zones: mixed use

Purple zones combine long-term permit parking with paid short-term visitor parking. A visitor may park for the limited period shown on the sign after paying through an accepted channel. Do not assume that a purple space is available for an entire day simply because the street is quiet or a nearby sign shows different hours.

Orange zones: visitor parking

Orange zones are intended for visitors, often near hospitals or public offices. The sign states the maximum parking time, and long-term permits do not apply there. Pay at the machine or through the current online option, then leave before the limit expires.

A safe decision at the kerb

Read the complete sign, check the zone on the official parking map, and confirm the payment location before walking away. If the time window is longer than the public limit, compare a garage or a reserved private space instead. The Prague rules hub links the payment, visitor, and sign-reading guides in one place.
